Special Report

Another Chapter in the History of Bremhill Parish...

What a fascinating and interesting parish we are! The presentations by the eminent speakers at the festival endorsed the rich history and heritage of our community. Introduced by Martin Nye, who inaugurated the history project, Simon Kerry spoke about the Lansdowne family and how they had influenced the development of the parish. Simon Draper gave an informative insight into our Roman and early medieval parish settlements. David Wood provided an entertaining talk on some of the famous (and infamous) characters that are buried in our parish churchyards complete with visual evidence of ghosts! The sessions were rounded off with a detailed presentation on notable parish buildings by expert Julian Orbach, followed by a panel discussion.

Each speaker expanded on their own specialism, with topics and case histories which can be found in the beautiful book BREMHILL PARISH THROUGH THE AGES which was launched at the event. The hard back book comprising 232 pages with fully illustrated text is the result of two years of research by village contributors headed up by Dr Louise Ryland-Epton who is the author. With many illustrations in colour the book which received some National Lottery funding is on sale at a subsidised price of £20 per copy.

On the following day parish children attended their own history event which was very hands on under the watchful eyes of Fiona Jarman, Sarah Jones, Mills Jackson and Emma Blackett helped by Ali Rushent from Wiltshire Museum. Pictures paint a thousand words they say, so here are some images of the Festival Event and our young historians thoroughly enjoying themselves on their own special day.
